NEW MEDIA / EDITING / PRODUCING: Before graduate school, I was at Al Jazeera Turk for four years as the Executive Producer of Social Media, managing the platform's overall strategy and day to day output, training the newsroom, testing new tools and services and experimenting with emerging storytelling methods, and generally doing all that comes with building a news brand's online presence and identity from the ground up. In 2013 I spent some time at Al Jazeera English in Doha, where I worked as a producer and new media strategist, and in 2009 I reported on the United Nations for Inter Press Service.

Since 2013, I've also been writing and editing at 5Harfliler, a Turkish-language (though now we have a budding English section too!) online magazine covering politics, culture, art and everything in between, often from a gendered perspective.

FACT-CHECKING, for the New York Times Syndicate, Harper's Magazine and the New Yorker, which involved checking long-form articles and opinion pieces for accuracy, digging deep into statistics, reports and archives, and re-interviewing sources.

SPEAKING: The first time I truly enjoyed speaking to a group of people was at Oberlin, where I designed and taught a for-credit course in Turkish language and history. I have since spoken at panels on new media, community management and best practices for journalists, and also have moderated panels and led workshops for organizations such as Creative Commons. As 5Harfliler editors we are also often invited to speak to college or graduate-level students about our project and, more broadly, feminist digital activism.

ADVOCACY / POLICY: Before journalism, I was a project manager at Global Political Trends Center, a think tank focused on foreign policy. I led projects on the Cyprus conflict, democratization in the MENA region and Turkish-Armenian relations, authoring grant proposals and project reports, organizing roundtable meetings and speaking to journalists. I have also interned at the Committee to Protect Journalists as their Middle East and North Africa Program Intern, the Scholars at Risk network at NYU as a Casework and Media Intern and UNICEF Azerbaijan, where I worked on a country-wide project on violence in schools.

TRANSLATION is sometimes a job (for VICE, or Turkish NGOs on hate speech in the media or constitutional reform) and more often a hobby, like this translation of Svetlana Alexievich's Nobel prize speech from Russian or the short story about Baku for the Translated By exhibition at Istanbul's SALT Galata Gallery. (Sometimes it is even therapy!)
